Congratulations on Rodeo Hall of Fame
I believe congratulations are in order for the Mount Isa Rotary clubs on achieving their Rodeo Hall of Fame, a welcome acknowledgement of the role of Rodeo in Mount Isa’s history, and another potential attraction for visitors to the City.

There were very many deserving Rotarians and volunteers in Isa Rodeo’s 59 year history and not all can be named.
I was however surprised to read the wording on the history of our Rodeo dealing with the transition from Kalkadoon Park to Buchanan Park.
It would seem to the casual observer that the Rotary Clubs were responsible for developing the award winning Buchanan Park facility.
Nothing could be further from the truth, many years dedication and hard work went into the planning and construction of Buchanan Park, by people like then Deputy Mayor, Graeme Saunders and other Councillors, by Phil Barwick on the Project Team and especially by Glen Graham who was responsible for producing the submission which secured $7.7 million from the Federal Government.
A submission incidentally which was described by Canberra bureaucrats as the best they had ever received.
There were many people responsible for overcoming the negativity and criticism, and building the best rodeo facility in the world.
I believe their efforts deserve to be recognised and recorded.
On another front, who was responsible for inviting the few remaining Rodeo Legends from the early years to Mount Isa for the 60th Rodeo, and then charging them to enter the Rodeo Grounds?
I can think of nothing more petty and demeaning, to both the Legends and the City of Mount Isa.
I would hope that the instigator has been made aware that is unacceptable, and nothing like this should ever be allowed to tarnish the success of the Mount Isa Rodeo again.

See cows clearly now the grass is gone
My office has received a number of reports of cars written off from hitting cows over the last couple of months between Mount Isa and George Fisher.
This included tourists not just people going to and from work.
We have been in touch with Main Roads they have advised that in response to the concern, they have deployed a team to slash the grass and shrubs to clear the sides so that the cows can be seen better.
As always though, continue to keep your eyes peeled.
Livestock and wildlife is a part-n-parcel of living in the bush.

Stay safe this Road Safety Week
I encourage all Queenslanders to stay safe on our roads this Road Safety Week.
Sadly, we have seen far too many fatalities on our roads this year.
The current road toll stands at 175, which is 20 more than the same time last year.
One accident is one too many.
It is not just fatalities on our roads.
The statistics tell us that 6,400 people are seriously injured on Queensland roads every year as a result of road accidents.
While governments have a responsibility to provide the infrastructure that makes our roads safer, road safety is everyone’s responsibility.
I encourage everyone to stay safe on the road, remember to buckle up and take a break when driving long distances.
