Not all that long ago, Mount Isa lost a quietly unassuming, yet well known and respected man to this horrible disease.

Mal Debney was a lot to many he was a rock solid presence to those who knew him and dependable as the day is long.
I count the family he has left behind as some of my nearest and dearest, and therefore he has become the inspiration behind my determination to take on this challenge.
With that in mind, I am pleased to introduce our team in the 2018 Mystery Box Rally.
Mystery Box Rally is one of the largest community lead fundraising events for the Cancer Council in Australia having raised over $2.7 million in the last five years.
Part of the requirements for our participation is to raise a minimum of $3500 but most teams raise well above this amount.
These funds go to the Cancer Council and we are extremely proud to be doing our part to support such a worthy charity.
My name is Rachel, although a lot of people know me as Reg.
Together with my friend Rhiannon, we have formed the team “Racks From The Stacks” and this one is for Mal.
Rhiannon and myself have been mates for 12 years since our early days in Mount Isa.
Since that serendipitous day where we met at the Barkly Hotel and instantly hit it off over a couple beers and tall yarns, we have shared many a road trip and camping adventure and therefore.
Throw in a bunch of enthusiasm and unwavering determination to tell Cancer where to go, we feel we are well qualified for the job.
Teams drive their own 25+ year old cars along a mystery route in this unique 5 day challenge, all in the name of cancer research.
The route is a loop starting and finishing at the same location, but all the other details are kept under wraps, only given to the teams each morning.
The rally is not a race – it’s a fun, colourful, unpredictable adventure with participants travelling at their own pace in smaller groups.
Vehicles often break down but “we never leave anyone behind” and each night is spent camping beneath the stars and celebrating the day’s achievements.
It all adds up to an incredible opportunity to see Australia’s vast and beautiful countryside and make lifelong friends, many brought together after experiencing cancer themselves or seeing cancer impact family and friends.
We have purchased a 1987 Nissan EXA, and together with a bunch of mates and my husband who, conveniently, just happens to be a trade qualified mechanic we have all worked together get it ready to go.
We had it on display in it’s first public appearance at the Buff’s Club Father’s Day Fair.
We have also had generous and overwhelming support from many locals - both individuals and businesses alike, who are supporting us through official team sponsorship, cash donations and in kind donations.
