Leichhardt Services won the annual North Queensland Championships play-off which this year was held at Cloncurry Bowls Club.
Rod Jolly from the Leichhardt Services Bowls Club was there to manage the team and he said it was the first time they had won the event.
The event featured teams from Townsville and Cairns as well as Mount Isa and they played a triangular tournament to work out who was the best in the bowls business in Northern Queensland.
Each team had 12 players and each club won one head to head each.
Cairns defeated Mount Isa (Leichhardt Services) and then Townsville defeated Cairns and it came down to the final game between Townsville and Mount Isa.
Mr Jolly said Mount Isa needed to win by a margin of four to win the title outright and they blitzed that target winning by a margin of 14 in the end.
“It was a big thrill to win – We had lots of younger players playing great bowls,” Mr Jolly said.
“I’d like to thank all the players and supporters who attended for their fellowship.”
Leichhardt Services Bowls Club will now get to lift the trophy from Bowls Queensland and will also represent Northern Queensland at the state pennant championships at the Gold Coast in November.
Also successful was Rob Peters from the Mount Isa (The Island) Bowls Club.
Peters was the Zone 8 Champion of Champion singles winner from the weekend who now goes down to Helensvale in October for the State Playoffs.
