It is a common misconception that republicans, like me, do not respect or admire the British Royal Family.
That is a red herring used by monarchists to argue against Australia’s natural transition to a republic in the modern world of the 21st century.
Republicans, like all Australians, should respect and admire the service given to our nation by Queen Elizabeth II as well the service from other members of her family past and present.
Supporters of the Real Republic Australia simply believe the future of our nation is as a republic with an Australian as our head of state.
And we also believe that Australian head of state should be one elected directly by Australian voters.
Prince Harry and the Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle will inspect a Queen’s Canopy project on Fraser Island.
The Queen’s Canopy project is a Commonwealth-wide drive to protect rainforests and combat global warming.
Of the 53 nations in the Commonwealth 32 are republics, so the project is living proof that any change Australia makes to become a republic will not diminish the respect we have for the Queen and her family.
The royal couple should be warmly welcomed to the Fraser Coast region next month, just as they and other members of the Queens’s family should be warmly welcomed to our shores after we vote to become a republic.

Katter’s sweetheart deal is costing regional electorates
Katter’s Australia Party are bleating about wanting extra taxpayer-funded staff over and above the entitlement of any other Member of Parliament.
KAP struck this sweetheart deal in exchange for supporting the Palaszczuk Labor Government in the last term of Parliament and at the 2017 State Election.
The KAP preferenced Labor ahead of the LNP in a number of seats at the election, which helped Labor achieve a majority government and force the worst vegetation management laws in history on regional electorates.
In the current Parliament, the KAP leader seconded the motion to elect the Labor Government’s Speaker.
Despite being paid an extra $24,000 each per year for being on parliamentary committees, KAP members had a poor attendance record at committee meetings in the last term of Parliament.
Despite having additional staff over and above other MPs’ entitlement, the KAP took the bush for granted.
They failed to turn up to the State Development, Natural Resources and Agricultural Industry Development Committee earlier this year.
That day is one of the most important parliamentary days of the year.
The KAP are resorting to sour grapes because they have been called out on their voting record and support of Labor.
KAP’s sweetheart deal with Labor delivered the devastating vegetation management laws the Warrego electorate didn’t want and can’t afford.
