A total of 21 hunters took part in a two-round contest with a double round of the 20 targets in the morning followed by a single round in the afternoon.
The targets were deer, boar and other wild prey but fear not animal lovers, no actual animals were harmed with bowhunters taking shots at pictures of beasts and being awarded points for how close they get to the “kill zone”.
Each bowhunter has a maximum of three shots at each target though has only one scoring shot with the score descending on the second and again on third arrow – so the incentive is to get the first arrow on target.
Mount Isa District Bowhunters scoremaster Leonie Sandell said the club was affiliated to the Australian Bowhunters Association and was celebrating its 40th birthday with an invitational shoot which doubled up as an ABA round.
Ms Sandell said it was a fun social sport to play with all ages groups represent including several youngsters some of whom were trying bowhunting for the first time.
“There is no killing (of animals) involved, it is all targets,”
The weekend was capped by the club’s 40th anniversary dinner at the clubhouse on the Saturday evening with many of the competitors camping on the grounds.
The Bowhunters meet every second Sunday and also on every second Wednesday of the off weeks.
There is equipment (bows, quivers and arrows) at the grounds to borrow for people who want to try out the sport.
