The initiative will help Hummingbird House continue to provide short break stays, family support services, creative therapies, and care for children and their families.
Since opening in October 2016, Hummingbird House has provided a ‘home away from home’ for more than 120 children and their families, at no cost.
The four Hummingbird House donation card designs have been drawn by children and their families who have, and continue to use, the hospice’s support services.
Seventeen-year-old Mikaela Norris has been a familiar face at Hummingbird House since it first opened, and with limited use of her hands, painted one of the donation card designs with a paint brush using her mouth.
“It took me a few weeks to complete but I thought it would be a really good gift to give Hummingbird House to say thank you for everything the team has done for me,” she said.
“I have had a few long stays at the hospice so my parents can have a break too, and it’s great to be able to hang out with the really cool staff and some of the other kids as well.”
Hummingbird House General Manager Dr Fiona Hawthorne said Coles’ support had been transformational for the hospice.
“Coles’ team members and customers helped build Hummingbird House and now each year they help provide our services, free of charge, to Queensland kids and families,” she said.
“It is thanks to the support of our partners that Hummingbird House can continue to grow and reach more families who need us.”
Coles State General Manager Jerry Farrell said Coles was delighted to continue its partnership with Hummingbird House.
“With the support of our generous customers and team members, we’re thrilled to have already raised more than $1.2 million for Hummingbird House since 2016,” he said.
“These funds have helped to build, open and operate the hospice, and we’re excited to see the local community back our fundraising campaign once again by purchasing a $2 donation card at Coles checkouts to support such an important cause.”
Coles will donate 15 cents to Hummingbird House from every pack 12 pack of Coles Bakery cookies, including Double Choc Cookies, Coconut Drops, Choc Chip Cookies and Anzac biscuits sold in store until 30 October.
