About 400 people converged on Alec Inch Oval to watch three games of rugby league between the schools.
“This is my first year teaching out in Mount Isa and I’ve been told it’s the biggest turn out for a game of rugby league they have seen in years,” Spinifex sports coordinator Emily Craven said.
“I know the kids were really excited, and nervous, to be playing in front of so many people.”
Ms Craven it was the first inter school league competition in more than three years.
“It was a great afternoon for rugby league in general, especially being able to have a girls game in the mix,” Ms Craven said.
“There were three games - 15 years boys, opens boys and opens girls. Spinifex won the 15s and GSCC took out the open games.”
“What a great afternoon of sport, showcasing the talent Mount Isa high school students have to offer.”
Ms Craven said she could not be more proud of the students.
“For a lot of them that was the first game they have ever played in front of a crowd - they gave it their all and I’m really glad they enjoyed themselves,” Ms Craven said.
“We now have even more students asking when they can put their name down for the next game.”
Ms Craven said there was a great show of sportsmanship from all players.
“There is always talk of the fierce rivalry between Spinifex and Good Shepherd on the sporting field, but there was an exciting atmosphere all afternoon with the community behind both schools,” she said.
“It was pretty cool to have the whole crowd cheering for a big hit or great try, regardless of which school.
“It was nice to see student volunteers from both schools refereeing and running water and great to see so many staff and students from both schools come down and show support for all players,” Ms Craven said.
“Obviously it would’ve been great for Spinifex to come away with full bragging rights, but we’re already talking with GSCC about what this means next for inter school sport, so I guess there’s always next year. But considering it’s the first week back, it was fun to end on such a high.”
Ms Craven thanked everyone for helping to make the carnival happen.
