Last week we wrote how the now unmanned United Petroleum pumps at McKinlay in North West Queensland had registered $2.91 a litre for one local man.
Though United Petroleum never responded to the North West Star, locals believe it is a glitch caused by storms which put the bowsers onto the highest setting and the reader said UP would reimburse him.
The man posted a photo of the bowser on Facebook with the caption “dearest fuel in Australia”.
But now a reader in Katherine in the Northern Territory has trumped that.
Jillian Holmes of DJ and Co Transport saw the report of the McKinlay fuel price in the Katherine Times and wrote in with her own experience.
“On a recent trip along the Canning Stock Route in WA, my family and I paid a hefty $3.40 a litre at a small community called Kunawarritji. (see attached photo),” Ms Holmes said.
“Then further along, at another community, we paid $3.20 / L.
“So, it's not just in Queensland that prices are exorbitant.”
Kunawarritji is an Aboriginal community in the Pilbara region of Western Australia on the Canning Stock Route.
The North West Star is seeking confirmation from Ms Holmes these were the advertised prices and not a default setting in the event of a power outage.
