They will hold their first working bee on Saturday 3rd November 7am-10am and everyone is welcome to attend.
Mayor Joyce McCulloch toured the site recently and congratulated the committee on their initiative.
“The team has a great vision and a community garden will be wonderful addition to the city.
We know these projects create an avenue for social cohesion, and do wonders for physical and mental health, and Council are delighted to support these projects,” Cr McCulloch said.
CWA garden organisers Jo Cranney and Kate King said the Copper City Community Garden is a project committed to encouraging sustainable lifestyles whilst creating a sense of place and identity within community.
“We aim at creating a beautiful, productive, healthy and social community gathering space, as a shared backyard that is available to all ages, backgrounds and abilities. It intends to incorporate education, cultural unity, social interaction and sharing of ideas,” Ms Cranney said.
Once the garden becomes productive, a harvesting will be guided by the philosophy’s take a little, leave a little.
Gardeners will be welcome to harvest small amounts of the garden’s produce at their pleasure.
Within the last 12 months the project has been started and has received a generous grant from MICC and various donations from other community business and groups, including Bunnings, Zonta, Men’s Shed, Lead Alliance, St Joseph’s Primary School, Boral, Outback School of the Arts and others.
The Community Garden is located at 3 Isa Street, in the QCWA backyard. The first working bee is on Saturday 3rd November 7am-10am. Please come along to join in, or contact the organisers to see how you can get involved.
