Static Monsters was put together as a small Strongman style competition with the Log Lift and the Axle Deadlift being the only two events in this iconic strength sports competition.
This year the Static Monsters are back and it’s bigger than ever.
On Saturday October 27 and Sunday 28 more than 700 competitors from 15 countries around the world will compete, including Mount Isa.
This is the second year the event has run here and organiser Scott Jones said it’s a niche sport where powerlifting and strongman are combined.
“It's an odd combination,” Jones said.
“In powerlifting there are the deadlift, power lift and the squat and in Strongman, which is totally different to powerlifting, they lift odd objects. Static Monsters is a combination of the two.
“A normal deadlift is when the competitor uses an olympic bar but in Static Monsters it’s actually a car axle.”
Originator and developer of the Static Monsters Chad Croft said he came up with the idea in 2015 and since then it has grown.
“The event has more than tripled in size by both events and competitor numbers,” Croft said.
“Also added to the Static Monsters group of events was The Static Monsters World Championships in 2017.”
“Athletes from around the world that place in the top ten of their weight class qualify to attend. Last year we had over 50% of competitors from Australia,” he said.
Challengers from the weekend’s competition have the chance to compete at the Gold Coast in May 2019 for their chance to win the The Static Monsters World Championship.
Croft said it gives new athletes the opportunity to try competing for the first time without the barrier of having to learn too many events.
“It also gives experienced athletes some goals to compete for as well as being able to compete against the best in the world.
The Static Monsters is now the biggest strongman event of its kind in the world.
The competition will be held at Stack City Fitness on Saturday at 10am.
