Mount Isa Metal Recyclers and the Mount Isa City Council revealed the new refund drop-off points with the opening of the city’s Recycling Tunnel at the Waste Management Facility on Jessop Drive and the Duchess Road Recycling Facility.
Both drop-off point facilities have allocated additional staff to assist with the process.
MIMR owner Bob Glanville said they employed two full time workers and are looking at employing a part-timer as well.
“The Container Refund Scheme presents an opportunity for the public of Mount Isa to expand their efforts in recycling within the community. Locals have contributed considerably to the Leukemia Foundation through Can Recycling over the past 10 years,” Mr Glanville said.
“This newly launched scheme provides an additional opportunity for residents to get behind recycling.”
A few steps are involved to get started beginning with registering for an online account to enable you to receive your refund easily, collecting your eligible containers, and then taking them to one of the two nominated refund points.
Once residents arrive at the Recycling Tunnels, containers will be sorted and refunds allocated to their registered account.
For residents who prefer to donate their drink container refund to a community group, sports club or another organisation, container return points can direct the 10 cents refund payment to a registered group.
Mr Glanville said the easiest way to receive your refund is via an electronic funds transfer into your bank account and it doesn’t take long to sign-up for a scheme account.
“We encourage all community groups and charities to sign up so once their code is active the general public can nominate their refund to go into that specific account,” he said.
Most drink containers of acceptable size can be returned and recycled, with individuals and community groups eligible for the refund.
