Mayor Joyce McCulloch was on hand to celebrate the official opening of Santa’s mailbox, and was looking forward to seeing how many letters Santa would receive from Mount Isa this year.
“Because the Outback is so far away from the North Pole, I know that Santa especially likes to hear from children in Mount Isa, and to hear how good they have been all year,” Cr McCulloch said.
“It’s a fantastic way for children to practise their handwriting skills, and to enjoy a Christmas tradition at the same time.”
Santa’s Mailbox will be available at the Mount Isa City Library until Saturday December 8, and each letter will need to include clearly written names and addresses so that Santa’s replies arrive at the right house.
Santa’s Mailbox has been installed at the Mount Isa Library for eight years, and every year there are hundreds of letters posted by the city’s children, with each one reaching the North Pole in time for Christmas.
Santa’s Mail Box in the Library is open now, and parents are reminded that children should post their letter no later than Saturday December 8 to be sure to receive a response from Santa.
Letters to Santa Claus must include child’s age, name and return postal address. For more information contact the library on 4747 3350.
