Nurse Educator for NWHHS Scott Windsor said the nurses will graduate Wednesday December 19 in a formal ceremony at Townsville.
“Presently, they are waiting for the release of their results,” Mr Windsor said.
Once the students graduate they will be registered with AHPRA, the National registration body for nursing.
Some of the graduating nurses have found employment with NWHHS and throughout the Mount Isa region on a rotating basis.
“There are five locals who have secured employment in Mount Isa, either in one of our departments or rotating throughout the whole north west.”
The students studied for three years through the JCU Bachelor of Nursing Science program.
“The first year, they participate in basic nursing skills and then gradually build up their knowledge base so by the third year they are looking after the high dependency patients and the critically ill ones as well,” Mr Windsor said.
“Once graduation is over the nurses will start out as a first year practice registered nurse (FYP) this is a 12-month program where they receive assisted support by myself as a Nurse Educator and a Clinical Facilitator.”
“The nurses will have six study days where they start with the basics once again and then towards the end of the year they’re doing more advanced life support for adults and pediatrics,” he said.
