The Strategy outlines various recommendations for the city’s sporting and recreation community for the next 10 years which Cr McCulloch says will not only improve the quality of sporting facilities and activities for residents, but also give a real boost to the overall liveability of our city.
“This Strategy was prepared by CPR Group on the Sunshine Coast and we thanked them for the incredible work they’ve done in preparing this document,” Cr McCulloch said.
“They’ve spent many months extensively researching and gathering data and information about the various sporting activities and facility use in Mount Isa.
“From that, they have put forward 25 recommendations for Council to consider going forward.
“We are pleased with the Sport and Recreation Strategy 2018-2027 and look forward to what we can do to continue making our city’s sporting facilities the envy of our region.”
Councillor Peta MacRae, whose portfolio includes Sport and Recreation, said the Strategy was a real asset for the future of the Mount Isa sporting community.
“It recognises that there is a high rate of participation in sport in our city and that sport is an integral part of the community’s culture,” Cr MacRae said.
“The recommendations will inform and direct Council’s future decision-making and vision of what can be done to deliver better services and facilities that will help keep Mount Isans healthy, fit and active for many more years to come.”
The Strategy was adopted at Council’s meeting on Wednesday, November 14 2018.
The recommendations include a Sports Parade Feasibility Study and Master Plan, Buchanan Park Entertainment Centre Intensification Study and a Mountain Bike Strategy.
The Strategy revealed that, despite many challenges, some clubs and associations are doing well due to their own self-sufficiency and through philanthropic contributions of local businesses.
It also recommends a sports precinct at Sports Parade to overcome challenges faced by many facilities, such as sustainability and maintenance costs.
