A three-dimensional zebra crossing has taken out the Keep Queensland Beautiful Environmental Innovation Award.

The crossing was painted by Boulia Shire Council out the front of the local state school earlier this year.
The award recognises innovated principles and actions associated with developing a sustainable community.
The novel method of traffic control has also started a chain reaction as other councils look into the unusual floating blocks to slow motorists down.
The white blocks form an optical illusion; the idea is that vehicles will slow down as they approach it and travellers’ interests would be piqued, increasing tourism to the area.

There are similar crossings in Iceland, Malaysia, India, New Zealand and the United States.
Boulia Shire Mayor Rick Britton said we’re the first town in Australia to have a 3D crossing.
“I have to give credit to all the Councillors from the CEO down to the person who painted the crossing because I just came up with the idea and they’re the ones who implemented it,” Cr Britton said.
Boulia Shire Council Acting CEO Harin Karra said their intention was to make the area more safe for pedestrians.
