The basketball season ended in dramatic fashion at the Cloncurry Police Citizens Youth Club last week.
The battle of the night was between Country Charmers and the PCYC Fire.
Youth and Community Engagement Officer Steven Chivers said much like the other games on the night, it was a tight defensive affair in the first quarter, with no team gaining ascendancy.
Before the end of the first quarter the Country Charmers lead 6-5.
Bernado Vergara scored four of his teams six points.
“Things opened up in the second quarter, the Charmers took a five point lead with Junior Kenji Mabuhay scoring four quick points,” Chivers said.
However the PCYC Fire blazed when Mace Bennett shot eight points to give them the lead at the break, 21-20.
Through out the third quarter the two teams battled, vying for the top rank, which changed multiple times.
Both teams traded baskets until the Charmers managed to wrangle the lead back at the end of the third quarter, 30-29.
“Neither team were able to get a hold and stay at the top,” Chivers said.
In the final quarter Miao Liu and Daniel Bartley scored eight and six points consecutively.
“Bartley finished in a flurry, scoring the Fire’s tying free throw which was the last point scored in the quarter, leaving it at 45-45,” Chivers said.
With the game in extra time, it looked like the Charmers were going to topple the PCYC Fire.
“The Charmers got a quick bucket to take the lead, but suffered a crucial blow midway through, having both Bernardo and Miao foul out, leaving them short on numbers.”
The battle of the final nail-biting game came down to just seconds and as the clock expired PCYC Fire won, 55-50.
