Mount Isa City Council’s brand new Christmas tree was lit up on Friday night and a big crowd was on hand to enjoy the show for its very first lighting ceremony.
The new eight metre tall tree replaces the old tree of more than 10 years and is taking pride of place in the centre of the Civic Centre lawn this December.
Master of ceremonies and Council CEO Sharon Ibardolaza said Mount Isa may not have the snow of the Northern Hemisphere Christmas but that did not mean they could not get into the festive spirit.
Mayor Joyce McCulloch was joined on stage by a bunch of “little elves” who together read out the Christmas classic festive poem by Clement Clark Moore Twas the Night Before Christmas.
Kate Hartley was on hand to sing a few carols and there were audible gasps when the lights finally went on.
