Those present enjoyed carols by local music and drama teacher, Kate Hartley, as the tree was lit for the first time.
They also enjoyed a reading of the festive poem "'Twas the Night Before Christmas" by local students assisted by Mayor Joyce McCulloch while the kids enjoyed free gingerbread and candy canes.
Council thanked all who came along and celebrated the official start of the Christmas season in Mount Isa.
The new eight metre tall tree replaces the old tree of more than 10 years and is taking pride of place in the centre of the Civic Centre lawn this December.
