The interns will participate in a week-long orientation program to familiarise themselves with the hospital, its services, clinical practice and procedures.
They will then embark on a series of rotations through a variety of clinical units that include general medicine, surgery, emergency medicine and additional specialised areas such as gynecology and obstetrics.
North West HHS Chief Executive Lisa Davies Jones said this year’s intake was Mount Isa Hospital’s largest intake of medical interns.
“Normally we have five interns; but this year we have six and all are undertaking the Queensland Rural Generalist Pathway,’’Ms Davies Jones said.
“We are also very pleased that all five medical interns from last year’s intake have chosen to stay within the North West HHS, thanks to our focus on creating appropriate career pathways for these young doctors to pursue.”
Ms Davies Jones praised the work of North West HHS Director of Clinical Training Dr Uli Orda and Senior Medical Education Officer Sabine Orda, who worked together to enrol the junior doctors.
Acting Executive Director of Medical Services for North West HHS Karen Murphy said Mount Isa Hospital is the ideal training ground for those interns interested in training as rural generalists.
“We are rural and remote, but big enough to provide them with the teaching, training and supervision they need, right down to individual mentoring,” Ms Murphy said.
“This is their first job of looking after patients in a hospital setting, which is really exciting for them, they are our doctors of the future.”
During the medical students training they engaged in practical placements and some of the new interns had already experienced what it was like to work and live in Mount Isa.
Mr Murphy said at the end of their university training, they nominate where they would like to go to access further training and support.
“All six of our 2019 interns choose Mount Isa.”
In Queensland, 780 new interns commenced work through out the state this month.
