The National softball titles expose Australia’s elite young athletes to highly competitive competition and one Mount Isa man, Te Urewera Potini, was chosen to travel with the Queensland side for the games.

Potini who attends Spinifex State College played for the U17 side.
The local up and coming sporting star was selected while playing for the Mount Isa team at the State competition in Mackay last year.
Potini started playing softball when he was only three-years-old and has never lost his passion for the game.
“My whole family is passionate about softball, dad used to play as well,” Potini said.
At the National seven-day competition Potini played first base and third base during each of the matches.
Queensland won against New South Wales 6-5 with the winning play by Potini.
“In the last innings the opposition hit the ball down the line toward first base and I gathered the ball and struck him out however over the seven innings it was definitely a team effort,” he said.
Steve Wagner trained Potini prior to the Nationals and the young athlete would to thank him for his support and help.
