The MTP-5 allows accurate tracking of air temperatures above the operations and will assist in the management of air quality in the community by providing new data.
The MTP- 5 was sourced from Russia and is the only operating unit of its type in Australia.
The profiler allows AQC to accurately measure air temperatures up to 1000 metres above the Mines’s operations on a continuous basis.
Matthew Meere, Senior Air Quality and Noise Advisor says while operation has just commenced, it is expected that the information from the equipment will assist in determining the stability of the atmosphere above our operations.
“In particular we will be able to determine changes in atmospheric conditions that impact the circulation of air currents in the area,” Mr Meere said.
With this information AQC is better able to assess weather conditions and operational changes required to manage the risk of Sulphur Dioxide in Mount Isa community.
The successful use of the MTP-5 is expected to result in application of the technology to other Glencore mining and smelting operations to manage their environmental impacts.
In 2016 Glencore launched their Air Quality in Mount Isa (AQMI) web portal on the Mount Isa Mines website, and the AQMI smartphone app, which can be downloaded for free.
