The biggest casualty was the Mount Isa City Council Super Sign On day at Buchanan Park on Saturday where over 60 sporting and community groups were expected to gather to offer information and sign on services about their activities to many locals.
However around 5pm on Friday with the weather situation worsening Mount Isa City Council made the decision to delay the event by one week.
“Please be advised that, due to the continued heavy rain and Severe Weather Warning issued by the Bureau of Meteorology, tomorrow's Sign-On Expo has been POSTPONED until next Saturday, February 9,” the Council said on their Facebook page on Friday afternoon.
“The decision to postpone the event was made in order to limit unnecessary travel for families.”
Council said any club or group that has equipment or other items set up at the Buchanan Park Entertainment Centre are able to either leave their things there until next week, or pick it up Saturday morning.
The official launch of the Great Western Games, which was also due to take place at the Expo, was also cancelled.
“Council sincerely apologises for any inconvenience caused - but, on the upside, the rain has been wonderful for the whole region,” Council said.
Meanwhile the rugby union Dyno Noble Summer 7’s rugby competition was also cancelled.
Due to be held Saturday night, Mount Isa Rugby Union made the decision Saturday morning as access to the grounds was sealed off with the closure of the Alma St causeway.
“Due to weather conditions the Dyno Nobel 7's has been cancelled this evening,” the MIRU said.
“This includes the strapping course.”
Cricket in Mount Isa was also due to resume after the Goldfield Ashes but both games were cancelled “due to the weather and the condition of the ovals”.
With weather conditions likely to remain the same for a number of days the knock-on consequences could spread to the coming weekend.
