Glencore said it would work with the Townsville City Council and the Queensland Government to make sure the funds went to the most appropriate disaster relief organisations.
“We have been saddened by the devastating impact of the current weather event across North Queensland on thousands of Queenslanders, their homes, livelihoods and communities,” the company said.
“While we understand the region is still responding to these weather events, we are pleased to signal our commitment to assisting with recovery efforts.”
Glencore said that as one of the largest employers and businesses operating in the Townsville region for almost 60 years, they had close ties to local businesses and community groups throughout the region and understood how tough it can be to get back on your feet and keep going when something like this happens.
Glencore has over 7500 employees in Queensland across coal, copper and zinc mining operations, including Mount Isa Mines, Ernest Henry Mine in Cloncurry, and a copper refinery in Townsville.
