The declaration was revoked at 6.30pm.
Around 1pm police received information that a fork lift carrying one tonne of hazardous material had started to emit smoke at a third-party operated and subleased area of Mount Isa Mines site.
Emergency services attended and a PSPA declaration was made at 2.20pm until the area within the exclusion zone could be deemed safe.
A 3km exclusion zone was established around Milne Bay Road, and the Barkly Highway.
Police evacuated the May Downs Station and the Mount Isa Airport was also temporarily closed.
The Highway was closed, north from Owen Stanley Road to Moondarra Drive and police asked people within the exclusion to evacuated.
Police thanked the public for their patience after the PSPA was revoked this evening.
Mount Isa Mines have not yet commented on the cause of the incident.
A Mount Isa Mines spokesperson said external Emergency Services responded to an incident within a third-party operated and subleased area of their site.
“Emergency procedures were immediately activated and the Queensland Police Service secured the scene. The incident is now contained, “ the spokesperson said.
“No injuries were sustained and normal operations have now resumed.”
