The 85-year-old singer and guitarist best known for his comical songs is instantly recognisable with his unique trademark – those teeth.
Chad is excited about returning to the outback and said his classic songs like Shiek from Scrubby Creek, The Shotgun Wedding, and Dinkum Dill will be played at the event along with some new ones.
“The crowd still want to hear the old ones they grew up with or played at parties, so I keep playing them.”
Chad said the first time he came out to western Queensland was in 1958.
“I toured through Mount Isa, Cloncurry, Longreach and Winton and really enjoyed it,” he said.
“I’m looking forward to seeing Winton again, to see how much, if any, it’s changed. The last time I was there was about 25 years ago.”
Chad’s performance will be held in the Winton Town Hall on Saturday during the Way Out West Festival.
“I’m looking forward to it because that’s where I played in 1958. I’m hoping some of the people I met back then will be there, but they’re going to be old people now, and I don’t usually mix with old people,” he teased.
The secret to longevity Chad says is to think like young people.
“You can’t always act the way they do, but you can certainly think like them, it keeps you young.”
Chad was inducted into the Tamworth Hall of Fame in 1979 and in 2010 he was honoured to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Tamworth festival.
Last year Winton swelled to nearly ten times its usual population when more than 6,500 people from across Australia flocked to the Way Out West Festival.
This year the event will be held the weekend of April 25-28.
