John Bruce had won the North Queensland Toyota Cowboys –Gone Fishing Experience, conducted by the North Queensland Toyota Dealers.
To enter the competition Mr Bruce purchase a minimum of $50 worth of product through Toyota parts or service divisions, but didn’t realise he had entered in the competition.
“I booked my car into Bell and Moir Toyota and I saw there was a poster on the desk and when I picked up my car the office lady said to fill out the form, so I did,” Mr Bruce said.
“I received a random phone call a few weeks later and thought someone was playing a joke on me. But turned out I won the fishing trip which I thought was pretty bloody cool.”
Mr Bruce had won an all expenses paid helicopter fishing trip to Townsville for himself and two friends. Including return flights to Townsville, two nights at the casino, all fishing and bait gear and return helicopter flights to several fishing spots.
“I pulled a trick on my mates and said I had won the competition but could only take one person, when they were about to flip a coin to see who would go I informed them they were both actually coming,” Mr Bruce said.
“I was a bit surprised to have won but it was definitely a tick off the bucket list.
“I am scared of heights but flying around in a helicopter to remote fishing spots was pretty cool.”
Mr Bruce and his mates enjoyed their trip and managed to catch a few fish despite a cyclone brewing off Queensland’s east coast.
Bell and Moir Toyota Dealer Principal, Lee Pulman, said it was great to see one of our locals win the great prize.
“It’s wonderful that out of all North Queensland, we get a local winning the competition,” Mr Pulman said.
“John and his mates were joined by North Queensland Toyota Cowboys forward Jordan McLean, who all had an absolute ball.”
