Eleven new nursing students received their first taste of university life during orientation week at James Cook University in Mount Isa on Monday.

The first year nursing students from Mount Isa and Cloncurry participated in a number of activities after enrolling in the Bachelor of Nursing Science, joining twenty-nine continuing students currently undertaking their study locally.
During the three day orientation program, students participated in information sessions; met lecturers, tutors and support staff; toured the Centre facilities and hospital; and networked with their peers.
Students were welcomed by their lecturer Jodi Brown and Centre director, Professor Sabina Knight.
The Centre also hosted a number of guest speakers including Elspeth Hillman, Academic Lead: Professional Practice, and Stephen Anderson, Librarian, who travelled from the JCU Cairns and Townsville campuses to present to the new students.
Mr Anderson delivered the Academic Skills Workshops, and said the workshops allow us (JCU team) to ensure students have access to tools and resources at JCU.
"They also allow the students to feel a part of the JCU community, as well as, the Centre for Rural and Remote Health community," Mr Anderson said.
The Centre for Rural and Remote Health, James Cook University offer the Bachelor of Nursing Science to students from both Mount Isa and Cloncurry, allowing students to live and work locally whilst they study.
Classes will commence on Monday February 25 for the first and second year students, while studies have already started for the third year nursing students.
