Council wishes to advise that the State Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) will from Friday, March 15, be carrying out extensive median and road works along Marian Street until the end of the year.

The median works are part of a project to widen Marian Street, which is part of the Barkly Highway, to create additional slip lanes and turning lanes, as well as improve linemarking.
It will involve the narrowing of the median islands between Abel Smith Parade and Camooweal Street – and, in some cases, the removal of trees, including one in three fig trees, and the rose bushes planted by a Mount Isa Zonta club.
Council Director of Engineering Services Emilio Cianetti says Council is concerned about the aesthetics of the street and has relayed these concerns to TMR.
“We are currently in consultation with TMR. We are working diligently and doing everything we can to reinstate the trees and grassed areas on the medians,” Mr Cianetti said.
“We are concerned about the aesthetics of the approach and we are doing everything possible to maximise the appearance of it and reduce the impact of the starkness of the engineering side of the project.”
TMR has indicated the project will cost $8.3 million and should be finished by December.
It will begin at median near the Marian Street intersections of Webb Street and Butler Street, with work to progress east along Marian Street to Abel Smith Parade.
Once that section has been completed, work will resume from Webb Street west to Camooweal Street.
The project is jointly funded by the Federal Government and State Government, under the
Northern Australia Roads Program.
Queensland Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey says the urban section of the Barkly Highway has a concerning crash history at the intersections to be upgraded, and the project will improve safety for all road users, including heavy vehicles, general traffic, tourist vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians.
He says the State Government plans to improve 20 Mount Isa intersections by 2020.
