More than 35 people attended the solemn event including Councillors, Council staff, teachers and students from Burketown State School, the Emergency Services and Health and community members.
Burke Shire Mayor Ernie Camp said the Australian and New Zealand flags were lowered to half mast and wreaths and roses were laid.
A condolence book is available for local residents and tourists to write messages of support to New Zealand.
It will be available at the Shire Office.
"The condolence book will be sent to the Mayor of Christchurch city," Cr Camp said.
