Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said following an 11 month trial in 2018, the government would now permanently add the extra weekly service between Cairns, Normanton, Mornington Island, Doomadgee and Mount Isa on the region's flight schedule.
"We have an opportunity to expand the existing service and this is an outcome that will help us better meet the needs of regional and remote Queensland," Mr Bailey said.
"These flights are connecting our remote and isolated communities, improving quality of life, so it is important to provide appropriate travel options."
Following the trial in 2018, the fifth service was implemented during the recent floods to connect communities in the gulf at a time when there was damage to access roads to assist local industries with the movement of freight that would ordinarily travel by road.
The fifth service is due to begin in mid-April.
