If you drive on Queensland roads, your vehicle should display official number plates and if the vehicle has been issued two number plates, both plates should be attached to the vehicle.
Legible number plates enable the accurate identification of vehicles and will assist the community in locating stolen vehicles, identifying vehicles in hit and run incidents and those committing offences.
It is the responsibility of the owner and any drivers of the vehicle, to ensure the number plates are kept in good condition and that they are clearly legible.
Any covering on a number plate should be, clear, clean, not tinted and non-reflective.
Your number plate should not be obscured by any other item on your vehicle, such as a tow bar, spare tyre or the tray of a vehicle. If it is, the plate should be moved so that it is visible.
Over time, the characters on a number plate can become hard to read due to weather exposure and general wear and tear.
You should not alter or deface your number plate without a reasonable excuse.
If your number plate is lost, worn or damaged to the extent that it is no longer clearly legible it should be replaced.
If your number plates are missing or are not attached as required, you can be fined and new and replacement number plates can be obtained from the Department of Transport and Main Roads. For more information, click here.
If you have information for police, contact Policelink on 131 444 or provide information using the online form 24hrs per day.
