Council said they were the victim of a phishing scam where an rogue email was sent out to an unknown number of recipients.
The email contained an attachment which if clicked could compromise the computer of the person who opened it.
In an email scam advice sent on Wednesday, Council said that if you received an email from the email account pennys@mountisa.qld.gov.au with an attachment named "invoice_000054279-1.pdf" please permanently delete any of these emails as they are a phishing scam.
"If you have responded to it by opening it and inserting your email address and password, then please change any passwords that you have associated with your email address immediately," Council said in the advice.
"We would like to apologise to anyone who may have received a phishing scam email sent from a Mount Isa City Council email account over the past few days. On Tuesday, 16th April our email system was compromised resulting in countless unwanted emails."
The advice from Queensland Police is that if you receive this type of email, it is recommended that you delete or ignore it without responding to the inquirer.
