Having won their opening game while the Starries lost, Town were expected to get the competition points but were pushed all the way by their game opponents.
It was always a close contest and with just 12 minutes to go, Town were hanging on by just eight points, the score 38-30.
That margin was made razor-tight when Black Stars crossed again and nailed a tough conversion to make it a two point ball game.
The fired up Starries pushed on and they thought they had won possession from a short kick off only for the ball to be adjudged to have crossed the sidelines.
With a sigh of relief Townies carried the ball downfield and with the aid of penalty grabbed one last try to make it 42-36.
Their failure to get the conversion gave the Starries hope and they doggedly pressed on but the Townies' stout defence held out to record the win.
In the other game the Eagles got up in their first game of the season against Wanderers 36-28 in a thrilling game in Cloncurry.
The points ladder after two rounds (number of games played in brackets) Town 4 (2), Brothers 2 (1), Cloncurry 2 (1), Wanderers 0 (2), Black Stars 0 (2).
This weekend Wanderers play Black Stars and Brothers play Cloncurry with both games in Mount Isa ahead of the much anticipated Legends of League game.
