Queensland's first May cyclone in 12 years is moving towards the coast after being named Cyclone Ann on Sunday morning.

The Bureau of Meteorology said Cyclone Ann was a category 2 system at 4am Monday.
The cyclone was located over the Coral sea about 1000 km east of Cairns, and moving west northwest at 24 kilometres per hour.
The Bureau said Ann was expected to continue to move in a west-northwesterly direction as a low-end category 2 system before begining a weakening trend later today .
"The system poses no direct threat to the Queensland coast at this time," the Bureau said.
The forecast track has the cyclone weakening before eventually hitting the coast near Lockhart River and heading into the Gulf of Carpentaria.
The last cyclone in May was Cyclone Pierre in 2007.
