Last month Townsville police launched 'Comfort Canines' at Townsville Mater Hospital in partnership with Community Supporting Police and Saints Rotary Club to harness the healing power of pets.
Good news spreads fast and when Registered Nurse Emily Symes from Hughenden visited the Mater Hospital and witnessed what a positive impact it was having on patients, she wasted no time in taking the initiative back to her hometown.
On April 17, inspired by 'Comfort Canines' a morning tea was held at Hughenden Hospital which saw local Officer in Charge of Hughenden Police Station Sergeant Troy Crompton and Flinders Shire Council Mayor Jane McNamara enjoy a chat with residents over a "biccie and a cuppa" culminating in a surprise Easter gift.
While the chocolate was hard to beat, the show was stolen by the miniature Police Dogs and Horses received by the residents, and the smiles could not be wiped from their faces.
"You could see everyone's mood just brighten straight away and when they got the toys at the end of visit you could just see how much it was appreciated," Ms Symes said.
