But a night earlier it was a little more intimate and relaxed as players mingled at the Buffs Club after earlier attending six primary schools and Spinifex State College senior campus giving some coaching tips to the next generation.
At the Buffs players of both sides were introduced to the stage by Legends of League MC Peter Rookas who said it was the beginning of three days of celebration and the first time the Legends played in Mount Isa.
"Rugby league is that game that brings us together," Mr Rookas said.
Cr Peta MacRae welcomed visitors on behalf of major sponsor Mount Isa City Council and she said with the town's rich history of rugby league, the council were happy to get behind it.
"The number of sponsors involved in this event is a great testament to what a support business community Mount Isa has," Cr MacRae said.
"A special mention to Cava Hydraulics, Steelcon and Hardrok because they donated material and labour and they've been at the oval all weekend and possibly the week before getting those grandstands ready to be certified, otherwise the game wouldn't be happening."
Traeger MP Robbie Katter was there, as he was about to don the boots for the Mount Isa side and he said rugby league meant a lot to him growing up.
"I met a lot of people, it gave me a good start, gave me confidence and it was probably a real help to get into politics," Mr Katter said.
"It's a lot more than a sport. You could get a bloke off the street that didn't have much but could be a star for a day when he played rugby league for his town. It was an enabler."
Mr Katter said he was a rugby league tragic and it was great to meet stars of the game such as the legends.
"I had their posters on my wall growing up," he said.
"It's a great thing for me and it's great for people in town."
Indeed almost 6000 people turned up to Alec Inch Oval on Saturday to watch the Legends beat the locals.
