More than 80 Year 6 primary school students and their families attended the Spinifex State College Gifted and Talented Launch on Monday evening to acknowledge their acceptance into the Gifted and Talented Program.

Special guests Mayor Joyce McCullough and Member for Traeger Robbie Katter supported the event and presented the students with certificates.
Deputy Principal and event organiser Miss Rebecca Lovelock said the Gifted and Talented Program had been running for many years and was an excellent opportunity for Year 6 students to embark on extended study at our college within the subject areas of Design Technology, Science, Music and Gastronomy.
Year 6 students from all primary schools across Mount Isa were eligible and required to apply and complete specific selection criteria relevant to the program subject that appealed to them.
The program will run for ten weeks during Term 2 and 3, students will attend the Junior Campus one day per week to complete the program.
The Gifted and Talented program has been made possible thanks to the generosity and support of Glencore's Mount Isa Mines.
Mr Phil Sweeney, Principal was very happy with the attendance and support from the Principals, Teachers and Parents of the primary schools on the night.
"Our Gifted and Talented program is a great opportunity for Year 6 students to gain experience and confidence to enter Year 7 next year, it provides the students with a great head start."
