Immediate recovery work from the monsoon and floods is underway, with the recovery process ongoing. As I travel around the region, I'm constantly impressed by the way people here are getting back on their feet, despite everything.

To help you, the federal government is now providing grants of up to $400,000. These are dollar-for-dollar grants - a hand up, not a hand-out - that can be used for:

As well as the co-contribution, anyone wanting to apply for the grants must have received and expended the $75,000 Special Disaster Assistance Recovery Grant for primary producers. This is to make sure that those affected are making best use of the funds that have already been made available.

One thing we've done is make the grants flexible to meet your needs now and down the track.

Once approved, primary producers can draw on the funds as many times as they need to up to their approved total, until June 30, 2021.

This means farmers and graziers control the timing of their restocking, replanting and rebuilding to suit them and their business.

I strongly urge primary producers not to self-assess their eligibility for these grants and to talk to QRIDA or the Rural Financial Counselling Service to get advice. For more information or to apply visit www.qrida.qld.gov.au.

The Australian government has committed $300 million for these grants; I encourage flood-affected primary producers to make use of these funds.

I have made it my business to see the damage firsthand and hear the stories of devastation, of heartbreak and of what is needed to help get impacted communities and businesses back on their feet.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has also visited the region - most recently just two weeks ago, in his first week after being re-elected. This demonstrates his commitment to the region and its ongoing viability.

Demonstrating the government's commitment, more than $3.3 billion has been paid or committed to support flood affected primary producers, small businesses, families and communities.

As at May 22, 2019, over $59 million had been paid to 1028 primary producers in Special Disaster Assistance Recovery Grants (up to $75,000 per eligible primary producers).

We know more will need to be done, now and later on. We're well aware you don't get back from that kind of devastation overnight and we're here for the long haul.

A long-term recovery plan being developed by my agency, the North Queensland Livestock Industry Recovery Agency, will be delivered by the end of this year.

In our work, the guiding principle continues to be ''locally led, locally understood and locally implemented''.

I believe in the people who take their chances in remote Australia. Families get knocked down, get back up and stoically accept their lot.
