Officers in Mount Isa contend with a range of conditions and environments as part of their daily duties and some of this environment includes bushland, riverbeds and mountainous terrain and in order to move quickly in these terrains, Mount Isa Station has acquired a Side by Side Utility Vehicle (SSUV).
Since arriving in Mount Isa, the SSUV has been deployed at a variety of large events including the Big Red Bash, Isa Rodeo and Show and other community events. The SSUV is primarily designed for operations in off road situations.
Last week a train the trainer course was facilitated in Mount Isa and a total of 18 officers are now qualified to operate the SSUV in the district.
Sergeant David Radford, District Education Officer said the vehicle and authorised drivers increases capability to access isolated areas, search and rescue operations, increase patrols and community engagement.
The SSUV will be at major events through the year and primarily as a pro-active policing strategy however may be deployed to respond to incidents.
If you observe the SSUV on the road, please follow all directions of police officers.
