Move over Andre the Giant, Australia has its own Andre who is taking giant steps around Australia.
Melbourne man Andre Jones, 57, is running around Australia, running well over marathon distances each day, and when the North West Star caught up with him around 120 days into his journey on Saturday he was enjoying a well-earned rest day in Cloncurry.
Mr Jones departed the MCG on March 10 and set off on an anti-clockwise run around the country raising money for his four favourite charities.
As his website says "I don't run races, I run continents" and by the time he arrived in Mount Isa on Monday, he will have covered almost 5000km - a third of the way home.
"I'm running 15,000km over 343 days to raise funds for four charities: beyondblue, GO Foundation, beyondblue, Royal Flying Doctor Service and The Smith Family," Mr Jones said.
"It works out the average will be more than 50km a day and it's getting slightly higher as I run inland, when I was on the coast there were a lot more towns to choose from to stay the night."
Mr Jones arrived in the north west via Cairns to Normanton and the Savannah Way.
"When I came down from Normanton I was doing 60km a day," he said.
"I'm by myself, if I find it a struggle I listen to my body and walk."
Mr Jones said he "didn't mind camping" which is just as well given the lack of townships in this leg of the journey and gets by lugging 100 kgs of equipment in a fibre glass buggy he pulls along.
"It's a recumbent bike frame which I've modified to have four wheels instead of three," he said.
"Worst case scenario I'm carrying 50 litres of water plus camping gear, food and clothing."
Mr Jones, a former military man, said he was a jogger not a runner and had never raced a competitive marathon but had done one major long distance run before.
"I ran to Darwin in 2017 that was my warm-up lap," he said. "Yes I'm relatively fit and yes you need physical resilience to get through each day, but a lot of this is mental."
From Mount Isa, Andre heads to west to the Three Ways, north to Katherine before veering west again.
