The old bridge was demolished in May to make way for a new bridge which is scheduled to open in November.
Council's director of engineering works Emilio Cianetti told the council meeting said the pier work on the bridge had almost been finished.
"Over the weekend we started the concrete pours for the piers, about 130 of them," Mr Cianetti said.
"They've driven the piers into place, they drill them out and there's a time limit you're allowed to leave the piers exposed before the concrete pours."
Mr Cianetti said they poured 145 cubic metres of special mix concrete.
"We're really pleased, it's about five days ahead of schedule," he said.
"We're now starting discussion as to when Council can come in and do the earthworks and we're preparing the headstocks for the bridge, which sit on top of the piers.
"From now on you'll start to see it more and more resembling a bridge."
Mr Cianetti said they were working with contractors on site to see if they could start the works on the proposed roundabout to Fourth Ave early.
"We don't want to get in the way of their progress so we're staying to one side," he said.
"The plumbers have done the upgrade of the sewer main that runs underneath the works, so there's a lot of works going on in the background."
