Rev Clarkson, a Bush Brother of St Barnabas, served for five years in Cloncurry between 1959 and 1964 where he would have been on a small stipend with just the bare necessities.
Cloncurry's current locum minister Rev Simon Hattrell said all Bush Brothers of St Barnabas took vows of poverty, chastity and obedience.
"John was recruited from England where he had been part of a group of missioner priests living in community. The brothers served the bush people from 1903, Cloncurry was one of their original outposts." Rev Hattrell said.
"A parish hall and Brotherhood house were built with materials brought in from Kuridala, Mt Elliot, Duchess and Ballara but both buildings burnt down. The original church, which still stands, was built by miners in 1907."
Rev Hattrell said Rev Clarkson was excited to be back in Cloncurry.
"John and his wife Lorraine were thrilled to be able to visit Cloncurry 60 years after he first arrived in 1959." he said.
"They met some folk who had been part of the congregation in his time here, many are grateful for the support and care of men like John.
"He remembers the generosity of the hotels where he would get a free evening meal and also the station owners and managers, who would always fill up his vehicle when he visited."
