Although earning career prize money of more than $1.5 million, Le Chef was not the favourite to win the CNW The Leading Independent Open Plate with the majority of bookies placing fellow Jay Morris trained horse Yarrapower with the shortest odds.
Le Chef jumped out to a great start in the 1000m race and maintained third position for the majority of the race, until kicking hard with less than 100m to go.
Jockey Aaron Spradau said he felt Le Chef was always comfortable.
"He jumped beautifully and remained in third for a while but remained comfortable, he kicked at just the right time, in fact he timed his race to perfection," Spradau said.
