Locals and visitors alike are being encouraged to take part in this year's Great Northern Clean-Up on Sunday, September 8, and help make Mount Isa and the surrounding area much tidier.

Several local schools, Mount Isa Landcare, Mount Isa TAFE and the Good Shepherd Catholic Church have so far registered their interest to take part in the clean-up, and more organisations and groups are being urged to sign up and get involved.
Council's Environmental Health Coordinator, Priviledge Mapiye, said the Great Northern Clean-Up is an annual event that's twinned with Clean-Up Australia Day and is organised for a time of year that's better suited to Mount Isa's climate.
"We have identified five main sites to focus our clean-up efforts on, including the area around Lake Moondarra, the Pioneer shopping centre and surrounds, the City Lookout, and Spear Creek," Mr Mapiye said.
"We encourage residents to contact Council beforehand to register any other potential clean-up sites in the Mount Isa area that they think are areas of concern that also need to be focused on."
At the sign-on on the morning of the event at the Civic Centre, participants will be given supply packs, which will include collection bags and gloves, and assigned to places to clean up.
Council will also run a recycled art competition, with entrants encouraged to create pieces of art by reusing discarded materials or objects. There will be a total of $600 worth of prizes and gift vouchers on offer for the competition's winners.
The Camooweal Great Northern Clean-Up will be held on Friday, September 13, and will focus on the Ellen Finlay Park and Camooweal State School areas.
Mayor Joyce McCulloch said the Great Northern Clean-Up was a fantastic annual community event that many school students and community groups participated in.
"Initiatives like this are a great way for Mount Isans to join forces and work together to tidy up the city and its surrounds, which is fantastic for the liveability of our community," Cr McCulloch said.
"Every year the participants of the Great Northern Clean-Up do a brilliant job and I encourage people to sign up and take part in this year's event.
"Every little bit of rubbish that people pick up helps and adds up to make a huge difference in our community."
