In partnership with Queensland Police Service and Pioneer Police Beat, PCYC will launch the Youth Zone at the vacant Pioneer Woolworths building on September 13 in conjunction with the Child Protection Week.
PCYC branch manager sergeant Bernadette Strow said the Youth Zone would work as a physical activity hub for school aged children to engage youth within low socio-economic areas and build respect through positive interaction and role modelling.
"This is not just a safe-zone for the area of Pioneer but the whole of Mount Isa," Sgt Strow said.
"We have three physical activity areas including the junior zone, senior zone and chill out area and we plan to provide a variety of activities for all ages including table tennis, boxercise and circuit exercises.
"We will open on Wednesday and Thursday from 3pm to 6pm and a monthly weekend engagement also."
Sgt Strow said she hoped the zone would deepen the connection to the local community.
"In the past the PCYC have held community days and movie nights in Pioneer, but we wanted to have a bigger presence within the community," she said.
"This zone is to interact and engage with local children, while we build good role modelling with assistance from police and other agencies.
"The bigger picture is also getting the families involved as well."
The PCYC Youth Zone will operate for the next six months with the potential to extend. It is free of charge and will provide healthy food options at the end of the session.
PCYC would like to thank Damien Lewis from Lewis Fire Protection, Narelle and Jason Crockett from MC Scaffolds and Simon and Joel Pate.
