I was invited to Spinifex State School Junior Campus to talk about my job as a Senior Journalist at the North West Star.
The class I made a presentation in front of were all university hopefuls and intrigued to hear about my experiences.
I made a short presentation about what my job entails, what qualifications I obtained to successfully gain a position as a journalist and discussed how we publish the newspaper.
We looked through some newspapers, our website and the program we use to put the newspaper together.
The students also looked through my work experience portfolio from high school so they could understand how important work experience is to get into any industry.
The class was great and were very engaged throughout the whole presentation
After my 10 minute presentation, students asked many questions and I felt a little unprepared but I just went with the flow.
I had some questions like: was there a time you nearly left journalism?
And all I could do was be completely honest with them.
There were times I had thought about quitting journalism. I had been thrown into the deep end with every journalist position I had received with very little training.
But it made me a stronger person and better journalist learning to think on my feet and adapt to any situation.
We discussed my greatest achievements and biggest challenges and how the newspaper is paid for including sales, advertising and subscriptions.
I was super nervous about presenting in front of about 20 students, talking about myself and my job; but afterwards I absolutely loved it!
I have always been very passionate about educating the younger people about career opportunities and the different avenues they can take; as this was not conveyed to me in high school. So being able to help these kids, just a little, meant a lot to me.
I was super proud to be representing the media industry and doing my part to encourage young, upcoming journalists.
And I don't doubt there will be at least two journalist that will come out of that class.
