Queensland Ambulance Service established the Indigenous Paramedic Program in 2012 to provide improved access to employment and a supportive educational pathway for people of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander background with a strong interest in providing health care to their communities.
Jessika Brind, executive manager for the North West Ambulance network, said the new job vacancy was a great opportunity.
"The Queensland Ambulance Service in Mount Isa is on the hunt for a new Indigenous paramedic to join our rank and is a unique chance," Ms Brind said.
Ms Brind said there were several cadets already around the region that were doing very well, including Ann Wilkinson in Mount Isa.
"At the moment we have five Indigenous cadets across the region that are at various stages of their program and Ann is a great success story based here in Mount Isa," she said.
"She progressed through the program and has been qualified as an advanced care paramedic for about two years now."
Ms Brind also raised the importance of having an indigenous paramedic.
"It's great to have a cultural link into the community and this program helps build that capacity," she said.
Program graduate Ann Wilkinson said she never thought she would one day be a paramedic.
"I started cleaning here at the ambulance station in 2010 and one day the officer in charge said he would make me into a paramedic and I thought he was crazy," Ms Wilkinson said.
"It has been a bit of a journey to get where I am today, I started off just filling baby capsules then from there I completed my cert four in trainer and assessor and became an ambulance instructor."
Ms Wilkinson said funding from the program allowed her to sit her panel interview.
"I never thought this would be my life but I feel amazing. I have gained so much confidence and my kids are so proud of me," she said.
