This will kickstart future work including a new roundabout, bitumen-sealed laneways, and a new columbarium wall within the cemetery itself.
The carpark at the main entrance will be extended, bitumen-sealed and line-marked, with the reconfiguration to significantly increase parking availability.
The work has already begun, with the existing carpark cleared of debris and sealed.
Meanwhile, a roundabout will be constructed on the north-east section of the cemetery, to finalise the ending of the service road there.
Three-metre-wide, bitumen-sealed and kerbed laneways will replace the existing gravel pathways between the conventional section's rows of graves.
The area will also be planted with large shade trees, and seating will be installed throughout the area.
The western portion of the burial area next to the lawn section will be filled to a depth of 1.1m, to permit the excavation of grave plots that are currently limited by the presence of rock within the excavation zone.
This area will be bordered by a tiered wall and will accommodate a new columbarium wall.
Mayor Joyce McCulloch said it was wonderful that Council is able to revitalise the cemetery and ensure it continues to be an inviting public open space where people can go to reflect or contemplate.
"The cemetery in Sunset has an indelible connection with our community and it's vital that it's not just a functional space, but also an accessible and welcoming one," Cr McCulloch said.

"I welcome the works that are happening and will be happening at the cemetery, and greatly look forward to seeing the end result."
This works are estimated to cost $390,000 and are expected to prolong the life of the existing cemetery for an additional six to eight years while work and planning proceeds for the northward extension of the cemetery.
A base surround and pad will also be constructed around the veterans' war memorial at the main entrance to the cemetery.
Council received funding in Round 3 of the state government's Works For Queensland program.
