Mayor Joyce McCulloch led a patriotic and welcoming citizenship ceremony to all those who gave their pledge to Australia on Tuesday September 17 at the Mount Isa Civic Centre.

One young Filipino family were among those who decided it was time to become Australian citizens.

Homer Tenorio and Jan Pestano migrated to Mount Isa from the Philippines five years ago. They have a young daughter who was born here in Australia and they wanted to hold the same citizenship as their daughter.

Mr Tenorio said the ceremony was a special day.

"After having my child here and living here for five years we thought it was time to take our pledge," Mr Tenorio said.

Cr McCulloch highlighted the influence of the mines and the role it plays in keeping the town so multicultural.

"Being a mining town we have to thank the Mount Isa Mines for continually hiring a diverse background of workers," she said.

Cr McCulloch also reflected on her own family history.

"My mother was born in England, migration has always been an integral part of Australia's history," she said.

The ceremony was finished with a classic chant of "Aussie Aussie Aussie, oi oi oi."
