Seven North West sportspersons will travel to Ingham early next month, to be recognised for their sporting achievements in rodeo, boxing, triathlon, rugby and stockman's challenge.
Nominated in the Junior category was Brandee Ferguson from Cloncurry. This is the second consecutive year Brandee was nominated for her involvement in rodeo events. Including representing Australia in the USA at the Youth Rodeo Association Finals.
Also nominated in the Junior Category is Patrick Roche from Mount Isa. Patrick was nominated for his excellence in Eskrima (Filipino martial arts). Patrick recently had successes at the 2019 Australian National WEKAF Championships where he competed in stick fighting.
Asher Guy from Richmond was also nominated in the Junior category for rugby union and rugby league.
In the Masters category, Sunia (Sunny) Raitava from Mount Isa was nominated for his successes in boxing. Sunia is a Fijian heavy weight fighter who recently took part in the Derrick's Boxing event which saw the best of the best from across Australia.
In the Senior category, Kimberly Alcorn from Mount Isa was nominated for her success in triathlon. This included being the first woman to cross the finish line in the Julia Creek Dirt n Dust Festival senior triathlon and representing Australia at the World Triathlon Championships.
Rob Carn from Winton was also nominated in the Senior category, for his success in Stockman's Challenge events.
James Derrick from Mount Isa was nominated for the Service to NQ Sport category. Mr Derrick was nominated for his events highlighting boxing in North West Queensland including the Derrick's Boxing held on September 21.
Queensland Sports Foundation chief executive officer Stephen Farrell said it had received nearly 200 entries, which had been whittled down to 43 of the norths best athletes across six categories.
Mr Farrell said the 43 finalists would be contacted and informed they had made the short-list and to attend the to the gala dinner at the Hinchinbrook Shire Hall on November 2.
"They'll be encouraged to attend, each of those will be recognised on the night, we will run through all 43 of those with a short presentation and then we go on to select the winners of each category," he said.
Mr Farrell said the nominations in a number of categories this year included a number of world champions and top-quality athletes.
